Off the Beaten Track – The Extra Mile Run Goes Virtual!

When the going gets tough, the tough get going… With 2020 putting some serious hurdles in the path of our community and conservation fundraising efforts, we needed the support of our friends, partners and sponsors more than ever – and boy, did they all come through!

When it became apparent that the lockdown was not going to be lifted last year, we had to think on our feet and come up with another plan. Seeing as everything was going online, from work meetings to friend quiz nights, we thought why not our Run, too? So The Extra Mile Trail Run became the Extra Mile Virtual Run, held on 24 September 2020 – and was an amazing success! The upside of taking our event where it had never gone before was that it allowed anyone and everyone to enter, no matter where they were in the world or what time zone they were in. Families, friends, local community members, and professional runners alike ran around their neighbourhoods, in their parks, along their beaches, and on their treadmills. The result was that we had 875 online registered entries, with additional entries from local Penryn College and Rob Ferreira High School, and a record 304 sponsored community runners – tripling our Extra Mile participants from the previous year! While we couldn’t announce an official winner, everyone took a win for More Community Trust and was awarded a certificate of completion.

But the fun didn’t end there… While we weren’t able to host our usual after-event Auction Dinner, we were still able to take our auction online. An array of luxury items and inspiring experiences, from investment jewellery to five-star safari getaways, from our very generous sponsors drummed up much excitement over the three weeks that the auction remained live.

All in all, we are overjoyed to raise have raised ZAR40 000! This money went directly to the two beneficiaries of this year’s The Extra Mile Virtual Run: our Jabez Preschool (65%), providing a place of learning and care for the children of Justicia B community; and the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Wild Dog Project (35%), conserving this critically-endangered species. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our sponsors who got our event over the finish line and make it a resounding success:
