Roughly 6,000 Huntington community members have to share a handful of water stations that receive clean water once a week. The alternative is to wait for the Government water trucks to deliver their allowance of 80l per month. The only other water stations that provide continuous clean water are the taps at Henna Preschool and New Beginnings Day Care, which are freely available daily.
In today’s world, it is estimated that a child dies due to lack of proper sanitation every twenty seconds; the number of children who die due to lack of safe drinking water is even larger (statistics include both infants and their mothers). In most cases, the responsibility of fetching water is often left with women and young girls, regardless of their state of health. These women and girls travel grueling distances to obtain fresh water, or to do the washing.
The new water project will benefit more than 50 households with at least 7 members each.
