The Extra Mile Sponsored by Investec Rhino Lifeline is Sabi Sands’ first trail run, with a fundraising dinner, organised by More Community Trust in partnership with the Sabi Sand Pfunanani Trust and Endangered Wildlife Trust.
This annual event raises funds for communities in the area – one of the poorest in South Africa – to further their development and make a real difference in the lives of the residents.
The event consists of two trails – a 21km course and a 10km course – through an especially scenic part of South Africa, and anyone – from professional runners to families and community members – is welcome to take part.
On the sidelines, food and drinks stalls ensure everyone is well catered for, a Kids’ Zone keeps young ones entertained, and competitions and prizes add to the excitement of the day.
The festivities carry on into the evening with a fundraising dinner. Guests gather in a riverside bush boma for an African-style feast, with a highly-anticipated auction providing much of the night’s entertainment.
Friendly competition drives up the bidding on an array of inspiring experiences, from luxury safari stays and helicopter flights, to an exclusive wild dog encounter – to name but a few.
The Extra Mile first took place on 19 May 2018 and was a runaway success. It raised in excess of R100 000, all thanks to the 500 entrants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators who came together in a heart-warming show of support.
From such a successful start, we expect The Extra Mile to gain momentum in the coming years. The 2019 event is set to take place on 21 September, and on 16 May in 2020.
If you do not wish to run or walk, you may prefer to get involved by sponsoring a community runner, or making your own donation – every single cent matters.
To close off the day, we’ll also be holding a dinner at the Protea Hotel, Kruger Gate, where incredible items and experiences will be auctioned.
